Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Lefty Wilson
Goalie Ross Ingram "Lefty" Wilson was an emergency replacement for three different NHL clubs in the 1950s. He was better known as a solid backstopper at the senior level who eventually became an NHL trainer who kept his skills sharp by serving as a practice goaltender.

The Toronto native played junior in the OHA with the hometown Lions in 1937-38 then stepped away from the game for a few years. He returned in 1943-44 and was a solid senior player in St. Catharines and Toronto and toiled briefly in the USHL and AHL.

Wilson's main job became and NHL assistant trainer and eventually full time trainer. On October 10, 1953 he replaced an injured Terry Sawchuk in the Detroit goal during a 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens. On January 22, 1956 he was loaned to the Maple Leafs to replace fallen Harry Lumley and faced his own club briefly in the third period of a 4-1 Red Wings triumph. Wilson's third NHL appearance came on December 29, 1957 when he played nearly three quarters of a 2-2 tie on behalf of the Boston Bruins after an injury to Don Simmons.
