John Pohl was born June 29, 1979 in Rochester, Minnesota. The ninth round, 255th overall selection of the St. Louis Blues in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Pohl is a graduate of the University of Minnesota.

An offensive forward, Pohl played four years at UM capturing numerous honours, including; All-WCHA Second Team (99-2000), WCHA All-Academic Team (99-2000), WCHA All-Academic Team (2000-01), First Team All-American (2001-02), Frozen Four All-Tournament Team (2001-02), NCAA West Regional MVP (2001-02), First Team All-WCHA (2001-02) and WCHA All-Academic Team (2001-02) while leading the Golden Gophers to the 2002 National Championship. In his four year career at UM, Pohl tallied 200 points (71-129-200).

In 2002-03, Pohl made his professional debut with the AHL's Worcester IceCats. In 58 games with Worcester, the Rochester, Minnesota native tallied 58 points (26-32-58) while finishing fourth in AHL rookie scoring. A member of the United States World Championship team in 2003, Pohl made his NHL debut with St. Louis in 2003-04, while continuing to hone his skills in Worcester.

Following the NHL lock out season of 2004-05, Pohl was acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 2005.
