In his four years at Colorado College (1996-2000), the Bloomington native scored 59 goals and added 69 assists for 128 points in 138 career games before making his professional debut in 2000-01. In his first professional season, Petersen led the Penguins AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in scoring with 67 points (26 goals, 41 assists) in 73 games and made enough of an impression on the Penguin brass that he saw action in 12 games that year.
