Erik Westrum was born July 26, 1979 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The seventh round, 187th overall selection of the Phoenix Coyotes in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Westrum is a graduate of the Golden Gophers of the University of Minnesota.

An offensively gifted forward, Westrum played four years at the University of Minnesota capturing numerous honours including; WCHA All-Academic Team (1999), All-WCHA Third Team All-Star (2000) and All-WCHA Second Team All-Star (2001). In his four years at Minnesota, Westrum improved his point totals each season and finished his collegiate career with 168 points (69-99-168).

Coming off an impressive collegiate career, Westrum spent the better part of his first three seasons in the AHL with the Springfield Falcons, while making his NHL debut with Phoenix during the 2003-04 season. The former Golden Gopher went on to play 15 games with the Coyotes, scoring his first NHL goal and finishing the year with two points before spending the entire 2004-05 season with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies

In the summer of 2005, Westrum was acquired by the Minnesota Wild. In 2005-06 Westrum spent the majority of the season with the Wild's AHL affiliate in Houston before being acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

On the international stage, Westrum helped the U.S capture a silver medal at the 2004 World Championships in Prague, Czech Republic.
