Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Kent McDonell
Kent McDonnell was born March 1, 1980 in Williamstown, Ontario. The ninth pick, 225th overall selection of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, McDonell is a graduate of the OHL's Guelph Storm.

A hard-nosed winger with offensive skills, McDonell who honed those skills with the Char-Lan Minor Hockey Association, played four seasons with the Storm (101 goals, 101 assists) helping his team reach the Memorial Cup finals in 1998, only to lose out to the WHL's Portland Winter Hawks. A member of Canada's Silver Medal World Junior team in 1999, McDonell re-entered the draft in 1999 and was subsequently selected by the Detroit Red Wings with their third pick, 181st overall.

In the summer of 2000, the Williamstown native was acquired by the Columbus Blue Jackets and split his first professional season with the teams ECHLs affiliate in Dayton and its AHL affiliate in Syracuse before becoming a regular with Syracuse in 2001-02. After spending the majority of the 2002-03 season in the AHL, McDonell got his first taste of the NHL in the latter stages of the season, seeing action in three games with the parent club in Columbus.

In 2003-04, McDonell saw increased ice time with the Blue Jackets, yet continued to hone his skills in the AHL before having his rights re-acquired by the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 2005.
