Matt Walker was born on April 7, 1980 in Beaverlodge, Alberta. The big defenseman played his junior hockey with the Portland Winter Hawks and the Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League. Walker was selected 83rd overall by the St. Louis Blues at the 1998 NHL entry draft.
Walker spent the first ten years of his professional career in the Blues system, splitting time between St. Louis and their AHL affiliates in Worcester and Peoria.
On July 7, 2008, Walker signed with the Chicago Blackhawks as an unrestricted free agent. The following summer, Walker found himself again unrestricted and he would again be on the move. This time signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
