Steve Moore was born September 22, 1978 in Windsor, Ontario. The 7th choice, 53rd overall selection of the Colorado Avalanche in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Moore is a graduate of Harvard University where he majored in Environmental Sciences and Public Policy.

The Windsor, Ontario native spent four years with the Crimson, where he teamed up with older brother Mark and younger brother Dominic to become just the sixth-ever brother trio to play for the same NCAA Division I hockey team at the same time. The Ivy League Rookie-of-the-Year and ECAC All-Rookie Team member in 1997-98, Moore led his team in scoring all three seasons at Harvard prior to 2000-01 when he was edged out by his younger brother Dominic.

A First Team All-Ivy League in 1998-99 and 1999-2000, Moore the 105th captain in Harvard hockey history in 2000-01 concluded his collegiate career ranked 18th amongst the top-20 all-time career point scorers at Harvard with 45 goals, 78 assists for 123 points in 122 games played.

Over the course of the next two seasons, Moore spent the better part of his playing time with the Avs' AHL affiliate in Hershey, before seeing more action with the parent club in 2003-04. In his first full season with the Avs' Moore saw action in 57 games, before having his season come to end after he was knocked unconcious by Vancouver Canuck forward Todd Bertuzzi.
