Tent Hunter was born July 5, 1980 in Red Deer, Alberta. The fourth choice, 150th overall selection of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Hunter is a graduate of the WHL's Prince George Cougars.

An offensively gifted forward, Hunter went on to play three seasons in Prince George earning WHL West First Team All-Star honours after registering 95 points (46-49-95) in his final season.

Coming off a solid junior career, Hunter was dealt to the New York Islanders in the spring of 2000 and subsequently made his professional debu with the AHL's Springfield Falcons in 2001-02. After only one season in Springfield, Hunter was moved to the Islanders AHL affiate in Bridgeport Sound before making his NHL debut during the 2002 post season.

After two more solid seasons in the AHL, Hunter a regular with Islanders in 2003-04 and went on to total 51 points (25-26-51) in 77 games.
