Playing with the Hull Olympiques of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, Francis Belanger established himself as a tough leftwinger with good scoring potential, and was selected in the fifth round of the 1998 Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. During his final season of junior, split between Hull and Rimouski, Belanger stepped up, scoring 40 goals, collecting 73 points and earning a staggering 381 penalty minutes. Born in Bellefeuille, Quebec on January 15, 1978, Belanger spent two seasons with the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms before making his NHL debut as a Montreal Canadien during the 2000-2001 season, where he played 10 games and recorded 29 penalty minutes with no scoring points.
