Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Niko Kapanen
Niko Kapanen was born April 29, 1978 in Hattlua, Finland. The 6th choice, 173rd overall selection of the Dallas Stars in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Kapanen came to North America in 2001-02 after spending the previous six years playing in Finland for HPK Hameenlinna and TPS Turku.

The diminutive forward had a career high 48 points with HPK in 99-2000, before making his North American debut with the Stars IHL affiliate in Utah in 2000-01. Playing in 59 games with Utah, Kapanen recorded 41 points making enough of an impression on the Stars brass to warrant a call up to the parent club. Kapanen earned a full time stay with the Dallas Stars during the 2002-03 season and was one of the top rookies finishing the season with 34 points (5-29-34).

Coming off a strong rookie season, Kapanen struggled in his sophomore year. In 67 games he could only manage six points (1-5-6).

Although Kapanen's point production would increase in the 2005-06 NHL regular season, he would be dealt to the Atlanta Thrashers.

On the international stage, Kapanen has represented Finland six times at the World Championships (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008) and was a member of its 2004 World Cup and 2006 Winter Olympic teams.
