Jiri Dopita was born December 2, 1968 in Sumperk, Czechoslovakia. The sixth round, 133rd overall selection of the Boston Bruins in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft, Dopita honed his skills in Czcehoslovakia, Germany and the Czech Republic before making his North American debut in 2001-02.

An offensively gifted player, Dopita was a member of six championship teams in the Czech Republic Extraleague and was named its the Player of the Year in 2000-01. Recognized as the "Best Player Outside the NHL" by the Hockey News in 2000-01, Dopita re-entered the NHL Draft in 1998 and was pluked in the fifth round, 123rd overall by the New York Islanders.

Following one year as property of the New York Islanders, Dopita was dealt to his third NHL team in the summer of 1999, having yet to play one game in the NHL. Now property of the Florida Panthers, Dopita continued his playing career in Europe and when the 2000-01 season came to a close, he was once again on the move, this time to Philadelphia. After 12 seasons in Europe, Dopita made his long awaited NHL debut with the Flyers in 2001-02. Upon his arrival with the Flyers, Dopita when on to play 52 games in the city of Brotherly Love, registering 27 points (11-16-27).

In the summer of 2002, the Edmonton Oilers acquired the talented Czech from Philadelphia and he subsequently went on to play a mere 21 games for the Oilers before opting to return to his homeland in 2003-04.

On the international stage, Dopita has appeared in eight World Championships, winning three championships (1996, 2000 and 2001). A member of the Czech Republic's gold medal Olympic team in 1998 in Nagano and its 2002 team in Salt Lake City, Dopita has also suited for his homeland at the 1996 World Cup.
