Born in Angarsk, USSR, Peter Schastlivy played with Torpedo Yaroslavl in Russia and was taken 101st overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.

A member of Russia's gold medal World Junior team in 1999, Schastlivy came to to North America in 1999-00. During his first three NHL seasons he worked on his game with the IHL's Grand Rapids Griffins while receiving the occasional recall to Ottawa.

In 2003-04, Schastlivy became a regular with Ottawa and had six points in 43 games before being dealt to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks for defenseman Todd Simpson just prior to the 2004 NHL All-Star game.
