Niklas Nordgren was born June 28, 1979 in Ornkolksvik, Sweden. The eighth round, 195th overall selection of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Nordgren honed his skills in his homeland before making his North American debut in 2005-06.

A skilled forward, Nordgren had stints with Modo and Timra of the SEL, establishing a career high in points during the 2002-03 season with 43. In the fall of 2005, Nordgren made his NHL debut with Carolina and went on to spend the majority of the season with the club while seeing limited action with its AHL affiliate in Lowell. However, in the latter stages of the 2005-06 season, Nordgren was acquired by the Pittsburgh Penguins
