Harry York was born April 16, 1974 in Ponoka, Alberta. He signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Blues in the spring of 1996 while he was a member of the Nashville Knights of the East Coast Hockey League.
Before joining the Knights, York was a member of the 1994-95 edition of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the Alberta Junior Hockey League where he led the league in scoring and was named its most valuable player. He spent the summer of 1995 as a member of the Roller Hockey International's Chicago Cheetah's before heading to Nashville for the 1995-96 season.
York's strong play in Nashville earned him a call up to the Atlanta Knights of the now defunct IHL before he signed as with the St. Louis Blues in the spring of 1996. He was assigned to their affiliate team in Worcester of the AHL where he recorded eight goals and 13 points in 13 games.
In his rookie year in the NHL, York won Rookie-of-the-Month honours in November, and had a five-game consecutive goal-scoring streak and an eight-game consecutive point scoring streak. He finished the 1996-97 campaign with 14 goals and 32 points in 74 games.
After beginning the 1997-98 season with the Blues, York was dealt to the New York Rangers in the spring of 1998. After playing in only seven games with the Rangers, he was dealt to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fall of 1998 where he played in just two games before being claimed off waivers by the Vancouver Canucks. He finished the 1998-99 season with seven goals and 16 points in 49 games. The 1999-2000 season saw York spend the entire yar with the Canucks, though he also dressed for one game with the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL.
Following the 1999-2000 season, York had played in 249 career NHL games, recording 29 goals and 75 points.
