Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Steve Martins
Since 1995-96, centre Steve Martins has been a solid role player on five different NHL clubs. In college and the minors he had the reputation of being a hard-nosed competitor who could also contribute on offense.

Born in Gatineau, Quebec, Martins was an amateur standout with L'Outaoais Elites and Choate-Rosemary High School. He then spent four years at Harvard University where he accumulated 139 points. After scoring 60 points in 32 games and being voted on to the ECAC First All-Star Team and the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team, Martins was chosen fifth overall by the Hartford Whalers in the 1994 NHL Supplemental Draft.

Martins split his first pro season between the Whalers and the Springfield Falcons of the AHL in 1995-96 but was unable to hold on to a big league spot. In 1997-98, he relocated with he franchise to Carolina but spent most of the season with the Turner Cup champion Chicago Wolves of the IHL.

Martins signed as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators in July 1998 and was useful grinder in 36 games. The Sens had an abundance of forwards, so Martins was placed on waivers and claimed by the Tampa Bay Lightning early the next season. He averaged over 13 minutes in 57 games for his new club in 1999-00 but was hardly utilized the next season. In January 2001, he was acquired by the New York Islanders where he played 39 games.

Over the course of the next three seasons Martins had a second stint with the Ottawa Senators organization before joining the St. Louis Blues midway through the 2002-03 regular season and then returning to Ottawa yet again in the summer of 2005.
