Greg Pankewicz was born November 6, 1970 in Drayton Valley, Alberta. A graduate of the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Sherwood Park Crusaders, Pankewicz spent two seasons in the Western Hockey League with the Regina Pats before joining the East Coast Hockey League's Knoxville Cherokees in 1991-92.

After only one season with Knoxville, Pankewicz joined the American Hockey League's New Haven Senators in 1992-93 before signing as a free agent with the Ottawa Senators in May of 1993.

Pankewicz spent the majority of the 1993-94 season with the Senators AHL affiliate in P.E.I. while only playing a handful of games with the parent club. After returning to P.E.I. in 1994-95, Pankewicz ended up splitting the 1995-96 season with the AHL's Portland Pirates and the International Hockey League's Chicago Wolves.

The 1996-97-season meant a new city and a new team for Pankewicz, joining the IHL's Manitoba Moose. The Drayton Valley, Alberta native spent two seasons in Manitoba setting a career high in goals in 1997-98 with (42) before signing as a free agent with the Calgary Flames just prior to the 1998-99 season.

Following a four year absence from the NHL, Pankewicz returned during the 1998-99 season to play 18 games with the Flames and 30 with the team's AHL affiliate in Saint John before being dealt to the San Jose Sharks towards the end of the season.

After being acquired by the Sharks, Pankewicz was assigned to the AHL's Kentucky Thoroughblades before joining the IHL's Houston Aeros in 99-2000. Pankewicz spent two seasons with the Aeros before signing with the East Coast Hockey League's Pensacola Ice Pilots in 2001-02.
