Right winger Shayne Toporowksi, who played his Junior hockey with the Prince Albert Raiders was a 2nd round draft pick of the Los Angeles Kings in 1993 but was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in a six player trade before his professional career had even begun.

Toporowski turned pro with Toronto's farm club, the St. John's Maple Leafs in 1995 and provided a physical presence up front while chipping in 11 goals and 37 points in 72 games. The next year Toporowski earned a call up to Toronto on the strength of 20 goals and 210 Penalty Minutes in his second year in the American Hockey League.

Toporowski played three games with Toronto during his call-up and while he didn't register any points he did post seven penalty minutes. At the end of his second professional campaign, Toporowski was not resigned but the Maple Leafs and became a free agent. He moved on to the St. Louis Blues organization when he inked a deal with them on September 9th, 1997.

Toporowski spent the next two years with the Blues AHL farm club in Worcester then spent the 1999-00 in Springfield after he signed with the Phoenix Coyotes before he elected to continue his playing career in Europe.

Toporowski took his bruising game to Finland when he signed with the Espoo Blues in 2000 where he posted 14 goals and 106 Penalty Minutes in 29 games then he moved on to the Belfast Giants of the British Elite League for the final four games of that season. The following year the scrappy Toporowski continued his European tour with stops in Sweden and Russia.
