Born in Richland, Washington Ty Jones played two years with the Alaska Stars of the USAHA before joining the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL in the fall of 1995. He proved to be tough foe who battled effectively in the slot and along the boards and was capable of putting up his share of points. The Chicago Blackhawks drafted him 16th overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and after four seasons in the WHL, made his NHL debut with Chicago during the 1998-99 season.

Jones was called up by the Hawks for eight games in 1998-99 but showed that he was was in need of minor pro seasoning. He spent the 1999-00 season with Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL and the ECHL's Florida Everblades before joining the AHL's Norfolk Admirals in 2000-01.

The former first rounder went on to play two seasons with Norfolk be joining the WCHL's Anchorage Aces in 2002-03 where he would play a mere 12 games with the club, while recovering from a shoulder injury. In 2003-04, Jones returned to Norfolk and was subsequently traded by the Blackhawks to the Florida Panthers. Upon his arrival with the Panthers organization, Jones split his time between the AHL's San Antonio Rampage and Florida.

On the international stage, Jones represented the U.S. at the 1998 World Junior Championships.

Traded to Kamloops (WHL) by Spokane (WHL) for Ryan Thorpe, February 1, 1999. Missed majority of 2002-03 due to shoulder injury in off-season training, July 15, 2002. Signed as a free agent by Anchorage (WCHL), February 21, 2003 with Chicago retaining NHL rights. Traded to Florida by Chicago for future considerations, March 2, 2004.
