Brent Peterson was born July 20, 1972 in Calgary, Alberta. Selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1993 NHL Supplemental Draft, Peterson starred for the Thunder Bay Flyers before enrolling at Michigan Tech University in the fall of 1991.
After four years at Michigan Tech, Peterson joined the Lightning's IHL affiliate in Atlanta in 1995-96. One season removed from Atlanta, Peterson made his NHL debut with Tampa Bay in 1996-97 appearing in 17 games with the Bolts while spending the majority of the year with the AHL's Adirondack Red Wings. Over the next three years, the Calgary native split his time with Tampa Bay and had stops in the IHL with Milwaukee, Cleveland and Grand Rapids.
In 2000-01, Peterson decided to take his game overseas and over the next three seasons had stops in Germany and Switzerland.
During that time, he established himself as a strong skating playmaker who maintained a well-rounded style of play.
