Murray Wing was born October 14, 1950 in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The 9th selection, 83rd overall, of the Boston Bruins in the 1970 Amateur Draft, Wing was a member of the Westfort Hurricanes of the Thunder Bay Junior Hockey League for two seasons, taking part in the 1968 Memorial Cup with the Hurricanes and the 1969 Memorial Cup with the Fort William Canadiens.
The Thunder Bay native joined the University of North Dakota for the 1969-70 and 1971-72 seasons. Although he did not play in his freshman year, Wing suited up for 29 games during the 1971-72 season, contributing three goals and ten assists for 13 points.
Wing spent the 1971-72 season with the Oklahoma City Blazers of the Central Hockey League before making his American Hockey League debut with the Boston Braves in 1972-73. While he spent a better part of the season with the Braves, Wing played a handful of games with the San Diego Gulls of the Western Hockey League.
In 1973-74, Wing played in his one and only game in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings, recording one assist. He spent the better part of the season with the London Lions before being traded to the Boston Bruins to complete the transaction that sent Gary Doak to Boston.
Following three years of professional hockey, Murray Wing returned home to Thunder Bay. From 1974 to 1977, he was a member of the Thunder Bay Twins of the United States Hockey League (1974-75) and Ontario Hockey Association Senior "A" Hockey League (1975-77). A USHL First Team All-Star with the Thunder Bay Twins in 1975, Murray Wing's playing career would end where it had started, in his hometown.
