Bill Thomson was a center/right winger who played a few games for the Detroit Red Wings in the 30s and 40s. He enjoyed success in the minors and senior leagues in a lengthy career.

Born in Troon, Scotland, Thomson played a year with the NOHA's Kenora Thistles before spending nearly five years with the TBSHL's Port Arthur Bearcats. In 1936 he scored seven goals in eight games for Canada at the 1936 Garmisch Olympics. Thomson then spent several years in the AHL and received a f our game recall to the Wings in 1938-39.

Thomson was a reliable player in the AHL and AHA for several year and scored two goals in five games for Detroit during a late season call up in 1943-44. He then played a couple of playoff games for the Wings during their semifinal series loss to the Chicago Black Hawks. He returned to the minors and retired in 1949 after splitting the season between the USHL's Dallas Texans and the Seattle Ironmen of the PCHL.
