Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Steve Tambellini
Centre Steve Tambellini was at his best when using his speed and improvisational talents on offense. He was a dangerous skater on the power play who rarely found himself in he penalty box.

Born in Trail, B.C., Tambellini played junior hockey with the WCJHL's Lethbridge Broncos. After scoring 155 points in 1977-78, he was chosen 15th overall by the New York Islanders. The crafty forward spent most of his first pro season with the CHL's Fort Worth Texans in 1978-79 before joining the Isles the next season.

Tambellini scored 19 goals in 61 games in 1979-80 but was traded to the Colorado Rockies before the end of the season because New York had too many talented centres. He scored 18 points in the last 13 games of the regular season before representing Canada at the 1981 World Championships.

The skilled pivot set a personal best with 29 goals in 1981-82 playing with Dwight Foster and Brent Ashton. He remained with the franchise when it relocated to New Jersey the next season and he produced 25 goals. In June 1983, he was traded to the Calgary Flames and was a solid role player for two seasons. Two years later, he signed as a free agent with the Vancouver Canucks and spent his last three NHL seasons on the West Coast. During his last season, he scored eleven goals and represented Canada at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. After retiring, he was hired in 1990 as the Director of Public and Media Relations for the Vancouver Canucks.
