Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Joe Szura
Center Joe Szura played parts of two seasons with the Oakland Seals in the late 60s. He was an accomplished scorer in the minors and also toiled briefly in the WHA.

Born in Fort William, Ontario, Szura played for the home town Canadians of the TBJHL then turned pro with the EPHL's Montreal Royals and Hull-Ottawa Canadians. He remained the league until joining the AHL's Cleveland Barons in 1962-63. Over the next five years he was atop AHL scorer and helped the club win the Calder Cup in 1964. He topped the 20-goal mark four times and notched a career high 46 goals in 1965-66 after which he was named to the league's first all-star team.

In June, 1967, the property of the Montreal Canadiens was picked by the Seals in the Expansion Draft. He spent the bulk of the 1967-68 season in the AHL with the Buffalo Bisons but did see action in 20 NHL contests. The next year he registered 21 points and was a solid checker while appearing in all 70 games.

After three years in the minors, Szura joined the LA Sharks of the newly founded WHA and scored 13 goals in 1972-73. He spent the next season with the Houston Aeros and helped the team win the Avco Cup before he lost his place in the line up the next season.
The hard working veteran retired in 1975 after playing ten games for the NAHL's Cape Cod Codders.
