Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bill Sweeney
Center Bill Sweeney played four games for the New York Rangers in 1959-60. He was best known as an explosive goal scorer as an amateur and in the minor leagues.

Born in Guelph, Ontario, Sweeney played junior with the local Biltmores and led the OHA with 106 points in 1956-57. During his first two pro seasons he turned in consecutive 31 goal performances for the AHL' Providence Reds and Buffalo Bisons. In 1958 he was presented the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the top rookie in the AHL. The next year he played four NHL games with the Rangers and began a run of eight productive years with the Springfield Indians.

During the early 60s he terrorized AHL goalies and recorded three straight 100-point seasons. In 1961 he won his first of three consecutive scoring titles and was selected to the AHL first all-star team twice and the second team once. By the late-60s his production waned and he toiled one year with the OHA senior Oakville Oaks before retiring in 1970.
