Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Duane Sutter
Duane Sutter joined the NHL just at the right time. The Islanders drafted him in 1979 while playing in Lethbridge with his brother, Darryl. But, he was called up to New York, where he played the majority of the year and helped the team win their first Stanley Cup. The Islanders would win the next three years as well and might have kept on winning had a guy by the name of Gretzky not come along.

After eight seasons with New York, Duane was traded to the Blackhawks where his brother Darryl was now an assistant coach, in 1987. After three seasons in Chicago, Duane hung up his skates to follow his brother's footsteps, becoming a scout for the Hawks until taking over the team's IHL affiliate in Indianapolis as the head coach in 1992. Sutter spent three seasons with the team until leaving in 1995.

Sutter moved on to the Florida Panthers where he was a scout for the team until becoming an assistant in 1997. He became the head coach during the 2000-01 season, where he coached until early December and was replaced by Mike Keenan.

Duane refused to wear his Stanley Cup rings around his brothers who never won a championship, saying that it "just wouldn't be right" knowing how much they wanted and deserved one. Hockey maybe his life, but family always comes first, especially for the Sutters.
