Forward Roy Sommer played three games for the Edmonton Oilers in 1980-81. The bulk of his career was spent in the minors where he was a solid checker who could also pitch in offensively.
Born in Oakland, California Sommer was a junior standout in the WHL with the Edmonton Oil Kings and Calgary Centennials. He was taken 101st overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1977 and became a useful pro with the IHL's Grand Rapids Owls and the Houston Apollos of the CHL.
In January 1980, Sommer signed as a free agent with Edmonton and scored a goal during a three game recall the next season. He returned to the minors and was a dependable two-way worker in the CHL, AHL and IHL before retiring in 1987.
