Defenseman Steve Smith was selected in the first round, 16th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. Smith enjoyed a solid three-year junior career with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and also played in the 1980 Memorial Cup tournament with the Peterborough Petes.
A lot was expected of Smith coming out of junior, as evidenced by the fact he was taken before the likes of Chris Chelios in the draft. However, in five years with the Flyers organization, Smith was only able to crack the lineup on 15 occasions.
In 1988, the Flyers left Smith unprotected and he was taken by the Buffalo Sabres in the October Waiver Draft. He played three games with the Sabres, but again was unable to earn a starting spot in the lineup. After a couple of seasons in the AHL with the Rochester Americans, Smith opted to try his hand at playing in Europe, playing for SG Brunico of the Italian League.
