After playing two years in Kootenay, Stan Smith turned professional in the Eastern Hockey League with the New York Rovers. When the Coal Creek, British Columbia native posted 23 goals and 50 points in 53 games as a rookie he caught the attention of the New York Rangers who signed him to a free agent deal on October 23rd, 1939.

Smith, who was born on August 13th, 1917, joined the Rangers for one game during the 1939-40 season while spending the rest of that year in the American Hockey League. The following year he was back on Broadway, this time for an eight-game stint. Smith scored two goals and added an assist.

In 1941-42, Smith played the entire year in the AHL, then spent the next two campaigns playing Senior hockey before leaving the game in 1944 to fulfill his military obligations.

After two years away from the ice, Stan Smith returned to the game in 1946 when he joined the Minneapolis Miners for the first of three and a half seasons. In 1949-50 the left-winger split the season between the Miners and the Pacific Coast Hockey League's San Francisco Shamrocks.

After finishing up the 1949-50 season in San Francisco, Stan Smith hung up his skates.
