Dalton "Nakina" Smith was born in the Ontario town of Cache Bay on July 26, 1915 and spent ten games in the NHL in the midst of his lengthy professional hockey career. Smith, who played 19 seasons of hockey spread over Senior, minor-pro and professional hockey as well as his short run with the Detroit Red Wings.

Smith was a two-time American Hockey Association All-Star in the midst of his 13th season as a player when he headed to Motown to join the Red Wings for 10 games. Smith, a centre, scored 1 goal and two assists for Detroit during his short stay in the National Hockey League.

Smith played six more seasons of hockey following his time in Detroit and had six different addresses in three different leagues as his career wound down. The highlight of his post-NHL career came in 1948-49 when he jumped to the Pacific Coast Hockey League and joined the Los Angeles Monarchs. After scoring 34 goals, a career high, and piling up 62 points in 63 games the defenseman was named to the PCHL Southern Second All-Star Team. After playing just 1 game the following year with the Monarchs "Nakina" retired from the game.
