Roesau, Minnesota became the hometown of Dale Smedsmo on April 23rd, 1951. Smedsmo went from Bemidji State University to the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League, an affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs who drafted him in 1971.
During his first full season with the Oilers, 1972-73, Smedsmo was called up the Toronto Maple Leafs. In four games he was held off the score sheet but managed two shots on net. It was to be his only time in the big leagues during his career.
Smedsmo spent the next two years in the minors before surfacing with the Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association. The next year the left-winger had five stops in four different leagues, beginning a journeyman run that would last until his retirement two years later in 1979.
