Two-time Stanley Cup winner Dave Semenko not only played with Wayne Gretzky, he was highly regarded as his on ice bodyguard.
Semenko played junior hockey in Brandon Manitoba for the Travellers and the Wheat Kings where he enjoyed his best season as an amateur in 1976-77 amassing 60 points in 61 games. That same year, Minnesota selected Semenko in the second round of the 1977 Amateur Draft and by the Houston Aeros in the WHA's draft. His rights would then be traded to the Edmonton Oilers, one of four teams to join the NHL in 1979.
He spent seven and a half seasons in Edmonton as the team won two Cups during his stay. His best playoff performance came in 1984 when the Oilers won their first cup and Semenko collected ten points (five goals and five assists), in the 19 games played.
After only five games with the Oilers in the 1986-87 season, Semenko was traded to the Hartford Whalers where he finished the season. He was later sent to Toronto where he finished his career.
