Left-winger Gary Sampson spent parts of four seasons with the Washington Capitals in the 80s. He was a top scorer in college as well as a useful worker internationally and in the minors.
Born in Atikokan, Ontario Sampson grew up in the United States. He was a reliable two-way worker for four years on Boston College then signed on with the US national team. In 1983-84 he notched 21 goals in 57 exhibition matches and took part in the Sarajevo Olympics.
Following the Olympics he came to terms with Washington and looked solid in 15 late season games and eight playoff contests. The next year he was useful worker with 25 points in 46 games and split three years between the NHL and the minors. Injuries began to hinder his game and he was forced to retire early in the 1987-88 schedule.
