Kent Ruhnke was born September 18, 1952 in Toronto, Ontario. A graduate of the University of Toronto, Ruhnke spent five years in the Ontario Universities Athletic Association with the U of T Blues before joining the Ontario Hockey Association Senior "A" Hockey League's Barrie Flyers for one game during the 1973-74 season.

Following his final season at U of T, the Boston Bruins signed Ruhnke to a five-game try-out contract. Towards the end of the 1975-76 NHL season, Kent Ruhnke played two games with the Boston, recording one assist.

In the summer of 1976, the World Hockey Association's Winnipeg Jets signed Ruhnke as a free agent where he played just over one year before joining the American Hockey League's Binghamton Dusters.

Ruhnke joined SC Riessersee of the Bundesliga/Deutsche Eishockey Liga in 1978-79, before becoming player/coach of ZSC Zurich of the Schweizerischer Eishockeyverband in 1980-81. After three years in Switzerland the last two as coach, Ruhnke returned to North America in 1983 to 1985 as the coach of Dalhousie University in the Atlantic University Athletic Association.

In 1985-86, Ruhnke returned to Switzerland where he spent the next nine years coaching, while playing as an emergency injury replacement during the 1988-89 and 1990-91 season.

Throughout his career, Kent Ruhnke played in two NHL games.
