Doug Rombough played Junior B hockey with the Fort Erie Otters in 1967-68 before advancing to major junior hockey in 1968-69 when he made the OHA's St. Catharines Blackhawks where he played for two years with the likes of Marcel Dionne, Bobby Sheehan, Vic Teal and Al McDonough.

Rombough was selected by the Buffalo Sabres in the eighth round, 97th overall in the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft. After graduating from junior hockey, Rombough was sent to the Flint Generals of the IHL to develop his skills. He spent the next two years in the minors with the Cincinnati Swords before getting his shot at the NHL, playing five games with the Sabres in 1972-73. He managed to dress for 46 games with the Buffalo the next year before being traded to the New York Islanders for Brian Spencer on March 10, 1974.

After spending just over a year on Long Island, Rombough was dealt to the Minnesota North Stars with Ernie Hicke for Jean Paul Parise. He played in 59 games with the North Stars over two seasons. The final three years of his career were spent in the minors. He retired in 1978 at the age of 28.
