Jim Roberts was born June 8, 1956 in Toronto, Ontario. The 2nd choice, 31st overall of the Minnesota North Stars in the 1976 NHL Entry Draft, Roberts was a member of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League's Ottawa 67's for three seasons (1973-76) before making his NHL debut with North Stars during the 1976-77 season.

During his rookie season, Jim Roberts split his time with the Minnesota North Stars and the New Haven Nighthawks of the American Hockey League. In 53 regular season games with the Stars in 1976-77, Roberts registered 19 points on eleven goals and eight assists.

Roberts split the 1977-78 season between Minnesota and Fort Worth of the Central Hockey League capturing the 1978 CHL Championship in seven games against the Dallas Black Hawks.

After splitting the 1978-79 season between Minnesota and Oklahoma City of the CHL, Roberts was claimed by the Winnipeg Jets in the 1979 Expansion Draft. Even though Winnipeg claimed him, Roberts never suited up for the Jets, instead joining the CHL's Cincinnati Stingers before finishing the season with the Maine Mariners of the American Hockey League.

Throughout his career, Jim Roberts played in 106 regular season games with the Minnesota North Stars, tallying 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points.
