Gerry Rioux was born February 17, 1959 in Iroquois Falls, Ontario. A free agent signing by the Winnipeg Jets in 1979, Rioux was a graduate of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League where he spent three years before making his NHL debut with the Jets during the 1979-80 season.

A member of the 1976-77 and part of the 1977-78 Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Gerry Rioux was teammates with future NHL All-Star and Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky during his second season with the Greyhounds before he was dealt the Niagara Falls Flyers where he finished the 1977-78 season.

The 1978-79 season saw the Iroquois Falls native join the Windsor Spitfires in his final season of junior hockey before making his NHL debut with Winnipeg the following season.

Although he spent the majority of the 1979-80 season with the Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League, Gerry Rioux played in eight games with the Jets that year. Held pointless in his eight games with the Jets, Rioux returned to the Oilers for the 1980-81 season before joining the Fort Wayne Komets of the International Hockey League later that year.

Gerry Rioux played in eight career NHL games before retiring from hockey following the 1980-81 season.
