At 6'5" and almost 220 pounds, defenseman Dave Richter was not hard to spot on the ice. Although he played a clean game, he was also by no means shy about sticking his nose right in the middle of an altercation, which is what the scouting staff of the Minnesota North Stars liked about him when they used their tenth-round pick in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft to take him 205th overall.
Richter played four years of NCAA hockey with the University of Michigan before joining the North Stars. He remained in the Minnesota organization until 1985 when he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. He also made NHL stops in Vancouver and St. Louis. He retired from competitive hockey after the 1990-91 season having played that year with the Albany Choppers of the IHL and the Capital District Islanders of the AHL.
