John Polich was born July 8, 1916 in Hibbing, Minnesota. A graduate of the Hibbing Bluejackets High School varsity team, Polich joined the Southern California Senior Hockey League's Loyola College Lions in 1935-36 and was a member for the next three years before making his NHL debut in 1939-40.

The Hibbing, Minnesota native spent the majority of the 1939-40 season with the International-American Hockey League's Philadelphia Rockets before signing as a free agent with the New York Rangers. Polich played in only one game with the Rangers during the 1939-40 season and only two the following year while spending once again the better part of the season in the IAHL.

Prior to the 1941-42 season, New York traded Polich to Pittsburgh (AHL) and upon hearing the news, Polich refused to report and retired from professional play and was reinstated as an amateur.

Polich returned to the ice in 1942-43 as a member of the SCSHL's Los Angeles Monarchs, a team with whom he spent the next six seasons with before retiring from the game following the 1947-48 season. In his six seasons with the Monarchs, two of them we're with the SCSHL and four of them with the Pacific Coast Hockey League.

Throughout his career, John Polich played in three NHL games.
