George Ernest Parkes was born November 4, 1894 in Victoria, British Columbia. A graduate of the Ontario Hockey Association Senior 'A' Hockey League, Parkes had stops in Toronto and Kitchener before joining the Pacific Coast Hockey Associations Vancouver Millionaires in 1921-22.

The Dunnville, Ontario native spent seven years in the OHA-Sr earning OHA-Sr Second Team All-Star honors in 1918 and 1921 and OHA-Sr First Team All-Star honors in 1919 and 1920 after scoring 22 goals in eights games with the Kitchener Greenshirts.

In November of 1921, Parkes signed as a free agent with the PCHA's Vancouver Millionaires where he was PCHA Second Team All-Star in 1923 as a member of the Vancouver Maroons. Parkes spent two seasons with the Maroons before signing as free agent with the Toronto St. Pats on December 8, 1924, only to be traded to the Boston Bruins later on that day.

After the Bruins acquired Parkes on December 8, 1924, the Montreal Maroons went on to trade for him eleven days later.

In his last season of professional hockey, the Dunnville, Ontario native made his NHL debut with the Montreal Maroons during the 1924-25 season. Parkes went on to play 17 games with the Maroons before calling it a career at the end of the season.
