Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Tom O'Neill
Tom "Windy" O'Neill was a fine two-way right winger who suited up for two years on the Toronto Maple Leafs in the mid-40s. In addition to his brief NHL tenure, he was a successful amateur in junior and senior circles.

Born in Deseronto, Ontario O'Neill moved to Toronto as a child and played two years of junior with the St. Michael's Majors. He played 33 games in each of the '44 and '45 seasons for the Leafs and formed a solid trio with Nick Metz and Art Jackson. O'Neill also played four games for Toronto during the semifinal loss to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens. He was considered an outstanding defensive player and was one of the few players to shut Rocket Richard down for an extended period of time.

O'Neill spent his last four seasons as a player in the senior leagues. The year after he toiled in the NHL, he skated for the QSHL's Quebec Aces. The next year he headed for the Maritimes and scored 25 goals 32 games for the Halifax Crescents. After playing a year each with the Crescents and the St. Mary's club, O'Neill hung up his skates for good in 1949. He attended law school and became a successful attorney in Toronto.
