Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- John Newberry
Centre John Newberry played parts of four seasons in the NHL during the 1980s. was a fine playmaker as an amateur and in the minors but never saw consistent ice time in the big leagues.

The native of Port Alberni, British Columbia was a BCJHL scoring star with the Nanaimo Clippers. After amassing 185 points in 1979-80, he was chosen 45th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the Entry Draft. Newberry accepted a hockey scholarship to the University of Wisconsin and recorded consecutive 30-goal seasons for the Badgers.

On the heels of a solid year with the AHL's Nova Scotia Voyageurs in 1982-83, the young pivot was called up for two playoff games when the Habs were knocked out in the first round by the Buffalo Sabres.

Over the next three seasons he played intermittently with Montreal but was chiefly a member of the club's AHL farm teams. In 1985 he led all Calder Cup playoff scorers with 20 points in 17 games. Prior to the 1985-86 season, he signed with the Hartford Whalers but only played three games for them. Newberry played with the Finnish club Karpat Oulu in 1986-87 before retiring.
