Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Tom McMurchy
Forward Tom McMurchy was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round, 49th overall in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft.

At 16 McMurchy was a scoring star with the Bellingham Blazers of the BCJHL, netting 72 goals and 138 points in 61 games. That production led directly to a spot with the WHL's Medicine Hat Tigers, but after just 14 games he was traded to the Brandon Wheat Kings where he was one of the team's top offensive players for three years. In his only full season of major junior in 1981-82, McMurchy scored 59 goals and 122 points in 68 games. He was on a goal-a-game pace in his final year but an eight-game call-up to the AHL and injuries limited him to just 42 with the Wheat Kings.

As a 20-year-old rookie McMurchy was called up to play in 27 games with Chicago where he had three goals and an assist. He made 19 more appearances in a Blackhawk uniform over the next two years, but was never able to make a strong enough impression on the coaching staff to keep him on a regular basis. When it became apparent the team was moving in another direction, the Hawks traded McMurchy to Calgary in March, 1986 but he was immediately dispatched to the minors and realized he was not going to crack the strong Flames' lineup.

In the summer of 1986, McMurchy signed a free-agent pact with the Edmonton Oilers, but they too were rich in talent, especially on the forward lines although he was able to get himself into their lineup for nine games during the 1987-88 campaign.

From 1990 to 1992 McMurchy played hockey in Italy, retiring at the age of 28.
