Born in the northern region of Ontario, Mickey McGuire played hockey in his hometown of Gravenhurst and then Timmins, suiting up for the Gold Miners in 1920 and 1921. In those days, hockey was secondary and men who worked in the mines, also played on the hockey teams. As it happened, McGuire was certainly one of the best players. He then joined the Porcupine Gold Miners when he switched job locations before heading to the United States in 1924-24 to skate with the Cleveland Indians of the USAHA where hockey was essentially the primary job. He then played a season with the Cleveland Blues. During his career, McGuire was known as a solid two-way player, but was not a big-time goal scorer. He surpassed the ten goal plateau just three times in his nine years as a professional.
McGuire played a season in the CHL with the Minneapolis before signing with the NHL's Pittsburgh Pirates in October, 1926. He played 36 games in the league and had three goals but was then traded to the Windsor Bulldogs of the CPHL. He also made a brief stop in London before finishing his career in the IHL, with Pittsburgh and finally the Cleveland Indians.
