Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Al McDonough
Right-winger Al McDonough was a clever goal scorer in junior and the minors who enjoyed one big NHL season. He played over 200 big league games and was a solid worker on the power play and could handle checking assignments efficiently.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, McDonough was chosen 24th overall by the Los Angeles Kings in 1970 after scoring 47 goals for the OHA's St. Catharines Black Hawks. The talented forward was also named to the OHA first all-star team. He spent most of his first pro season with the AHL's Springfield Kings.

Halfway through the 1971-72 season, McDonough was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Bob Woytowich. He fit in well with his new club then exploded for 35 goals the next season playing with Syl Apps and Lowell MacDonald. The next year, he was averaging nearly a point per game and was chosen to play in the All-Star Game before he was traded to the Atlanta Flames for Chuck Arnason and Bob Paradise.

After scoring ten goals in 35 games for the Flames and suffering through a poor first round playoff performance, McDonough jumped to the WHA's Cleveland Crusaders. He scored 34 goals that first season then split the next two years between Cleveland and the Minnesota Fighting Saints. McDonough retired in 1978 after playing 13 games with the Detroit Red Wings and the rest of the year with Kansas City of the CHL.
