Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- John McCreedy
Johnny McCreedy played most of his hockey career in western Canada in the 1930s and 1940s and was commonly recognized as one of the better goal scorers of his era. He had a smooth-skating style and what he lacked in size, he made up for in quickness.

In 1935 he joined the Winnipeg Monarchs where he played for two years, leading the team to the Memorial Cup championship in the second season. In nine Memorial Cup games he responded with 13 goals and 18 points. From there he played two seasons with the Trail Smoke Eaters and was again looked upon to help lead the team offensively. In 1939-40 he suited up with the Kirkland Lake Blue Devils. In 20 Allan Cup matches he had 20 goals. The highlight of his career came in that 1939-40 season when he represented Canada at the World Championships.

McCreedy had long been overlooked by scouts from NHL teams and did not get his first chance to play in the NHL until 1941-42, playing in 47 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a team which included star players such as Gordie Drillon, Syl Apps and goaltender Turk Broda. He scored 15 goals and 23 points. In 13 playoff games he scored seven points en route to the Leafs winning the Stanley Cup in the seventh and deciding game over the Detroit Red Wings.

McCreedy's hockey career, like many others, was shut down for a couple of years during World War Two and he was limited to playing a few games with the Toronto and Brantford RCAF teams. In 1944-45 he returned to the Maple Leafs for one more season. Once again the Leafs won the Stanley Cup, beating Detroit in seven games.
