Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Gary McAdam
Left-winger Gary McAdam was a useful two-way worker who played over 500 NHL games in the 1970s and '80s. He had quick hands and good speed which made him useful five on five and on the power play.

The native of Smiths Falls, Ontario played junior with the Ottawa 67's and the St. Catharines Blackhawks but had to sit out one year due to an injury. After scoring 24 goals for St. Catharines in 1974-75, McAdam was chosen 53rd overall by the Buffalo Sabres at the Amateur Draft. He split his rookie season between the NHL and the Hershey Bears of the AHL. Over the next two years, the young forward formed a solid line with Terry Martin and Fred Stanfield.

In February 1979, McAdam was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for veteran enforcer Dave Schultz. The next year he matched a career high with 19 goals and helped the Pens give Boston a tough battle in the first round of the playoffs. He often worked well when placed on the same line with Greg Malone and Paul Marshall.

During the first half of the '80s, the solid winger bounced around the league with the Detroit Red Wings, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Sabres for a second time. His most productive season was a 40-goal performance with the AHL's Rochester Americans in 1982-83. He retired in 1986 after playing a season with Toronto and the St. Catharines Saints of the AHL.
