Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Fred Lowrey
Right-winger Fred Lowrey played briefly with the Montreal Maroons and Pittsburgh Pirates in the mid-20s. He was a decent goal scorer who could also use his speed to check the opposition. He spent the bulk of his lengthy career in the minors and senior leagues.

Born in Ottawa, "Frock" Lowrey played junior with the local Lansdownes. He then spent four years with the hometown Munitions, Military HQ and Royal Rifles senior teams before heading to New Haven, Connecticut to compete in the USAHA. In November, 1924, Lowrey was signed as a free agent by the Maroons. During the 1924-25 season he played a solid checking role on a line with Alf Skinner and Ernie Parkes. Ten games into the next season he was claimed on waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 16 games for his new club he scored his only NHL goal and worked well when teamed with Louis Berlinquette and Odie Cleghorn.

Following his MHL tenure, Lowrey spent several years in the Can-Am League. He spent time on three different clubs and helped the New Haven Eagles finish first in the 1926-27 regular season standings. The veteran forward later toiled in the IAHL and OPHL before returning to Ottawa to play for the senior Rideaus in 1933-34. Lowrey also suited up for the Ottawa and Trenton RCAF detachments before retiring in 1937.
