Left-winger Antero Lehtonen played most of the 1979-80 season with the Washington Capitals. He was best known as a dangerous goal scorer in his native Finland.
Born in Tampere, Finland, Lehtonen spent several years with Tappara Tampere and TPS Turku. He was a key member of Tappara when they won the Finnish championship in 1975 and 1979. Lehtonen also leant his skills to the national team at the 1974 World Junior Championships and the World Championships in 1977, 1979 and 1981.
After being named to the Finnish first all-star team in 1979, Lehtonen signed as a free agent with the Washington Capitals. He scored 21 points in 65 games and played a solid defensive role on the young club. He returned to Tappara the next season the spent time in Turku and with JYP Jyvaskyla before retiring in 1987. During his highly successful domestic career, Lehtonen topped the 20-goal mark seven times.
