Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Don Laurence
Don Laurence was an offensive-minded centre that played briefly with the Atlanta Flames and St. Louis Blues in the late 70s. Most of his impressive scoring exploits came in junior, the minors and Europe.

Born in Galt, Ontario, Laurence was chosen 28th overall by Atlanta in 1977 after four years in the OHA with the Peterborough Petes and Kitchener Rangers. During his first pro season he scored 15 goals but injuries limited him to 39 games. Laurence impressed with 14 goals as a rookie with the Flames in 1978-79 and formed a solid forward unit Bobby Lalonde and John Gould. Early the next season he was part of the package sent to the St. Louis Blues for veteran Garry Unger. Laurence played 20 games for his new club but never really fit in as a long-term solution at centre.

During the early 80s, the slick pivot terrorized goalies in the Central Hockey League. He helped the Salt Lake Golden Eagles win the league championship in 1980 and 1981 then continued his hot streak with the Indianapolis Checkers in 1982 and 1983. Laurence also reached the 40-goal mark three straight years with the Checkers and was named to the CHL second all-star team in 1983.

Between 1984-85 and 1990-91, Laurence was a scoring dynamo in Switzerland. During his first European season he led the Swiss Elite League with 25 goals while skating for Ambri-Piotta. In 1986-87 he played his first of five years with EV Zug where he remained until his retirement.
