Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Bernie Johnston
Bernie Johnston was a slick playmaking centre who registered impressive numbers as a junior, in the minor leagues and in Europe. He was fairly productive during his brief stint with the Hartford Whalers but could not keep hold of a starting job. Johnston came along when there was a plethora of offensive-minded centres available to NHL teams from North America and Europe.

The Toronto native began garnering attention as a scoring star with the Ajax Waxers. He spent three years with the OHA's Toronto Marlboros, with whom he won a Memorial Cup in 1975. Despite playing on a national championship squad, the 1974-75 season was trying for Johnston. The year promised a great deal as he was placed on a line with Bruce Boudreau and Mark Napier but knee woes limited his playing time right through to the Memorial Cup.

When his junior career ended in 1976, Johnston remained undrafted and unsigned. In 1976-77 he scored 124 points in 73 games for the Syracuse Blazers of the North American Hockey League. A few weeks later he signed with the Philadelphia Flyers and was assigned to the Maine Mariners of the AHL.

Johnston excelled in Maine, especially during his second year in 1978-79 when he led the AHL with 66 assists and 95 points. He was the winner of the John B. Sollenberger trophy as the league's scoring champion and the Fred T. Hunt Memorial trophy as the AHL's most gentlemanly player.

There was no room for Johnston on the deep Philadelphia roster. In June 1979 he was claimed by the Hartford Whalers in the expansion draft that followed the NHL/WHA merger. He played 57 games over two seasons for Hartford and registered 36 points. The remainder of his pro career was split between the AHL and the Swiss Elite league where he skated for Kloten and Basel.
